We're a family that's been traveling the world since 2016 — three daughters, no fixed home. The screen didn't lose to a rule. It lost to a more interesting life. Here's exactly how we did it, written down.

How we cut our kids' screen time
from 4 hours to 20 minutes

We gave our oldest daughter a learning app. A good one — the kind everyone recommends. After a few weeks we noticed she wasn't learning, she was racing to the reward game at the end of each lesson. That's when it clicked: even the "good" apps run on the same machinery as the bad ones. Reward, repetition, pull.

We also noticed something else. When our daughters are fully absorbed by the real world — building something, talking to a stranger, exploring a hillside — they forget screens exist. Not "they don't mention it." They forget. The wanting doesn't appear if something more interesting got there first.

Once we saw that, everything changed. We stopped trying to limit the screen. We started filling the space before the reaching began.

"Not a child who is forbidden from screens. A child who finds the world more interesting."

This is not about banning anything. We still use screens. Our daughters use them too. This guide is the actual approach we've lived with three kids on the road since 2016 — 12 things we learned that any family can use, whether you live in an apartment in Stuttgart or a camper in Uzbekistan.

Why even "educational" apps are built like slot machines — the exact mechanics, explained plainly
The Boredom Gap: what it is, why you should let it happen, and how long it actually lasts
What to do in the first five minutes when you take the screen away — specific, by age 3 to 10
What to say when your child cries for the device — four situations, exact words that work without a fight
How we handle travel days, sick days, and the moments every parent gives in anyway

Timo and Salima with their three daughters on the road

Two filmmakers.
One family. One camper.

We're Timo and Salima — both documentary filmmakers, both behind the camera. We've been travelling with our children since 2016, now three daughters: ten, six, and three years old. The first two journeys became two theatrical films, directed together. The third is next: driving through the world in a camper, no fixed end date. We film what happens. Even when it's not pretty. That's why our films don't have drone sunsets with piano music — but real conversations with real people.

Living Proof

We don't just write about this life.
We filmed it.

Most parenting advice comes from people you'll never see. Ours comes with evidence. Two of our journeys became full-length documentaries that ran in 41 cinemas across Germany — no script, no second takes, the real days behind everything in that guide.

They're in German with subtitles, made for a German audience. Think of them less as something to buy and more as proof that this family actually lives what it teaches. If you want to see it rather than read about it — they're below.

On the Way —
When Encounters Change Everything

In 2016 we sold everything. Three years in Asia, with one small child, then two. We didn't know what we were looking for. We found people. This film shows what happens when you truly listen — no schedule, no safety net, no return ticket.

The Long Way Around

A family travel documentary — Europe, the Caucasus, Iran and India. And the ten months we couldn't leave.

Overland to India. Along the way, Salima became pregnant. Our daughter was born in Goa — and then India wouldn't let us leave. Ten months stuck. A surrogacy accusation we had nothing to do with, a newborn in our arms, and savings that disappeared week by week. We didn't know if we'd be going home — or facing a criminal charge. This film shows the moments when we didn't know how to keep going. Especially those.

Ran in over 41 cinemas across Germany. 20 cinemas extended the run by audience demand — over 87 screenings.
